Abstract

The objectives of this project are the production of biofuel for industrial and agricultural use from castor seeds and the promotion of castor cultivation in the province of Entre Ríos. The market study revealed that the use of diesel for the drying of grain in the Argentina Republic exceeds 4000000 liters; this fuel can be replaced by the biofuel castor oil for its high quality and low price. Ricinus communis is a shrub whose seeds have 52% oil (w/w) inedible. It adapts to subtropical climates and soils in which soy does not grow. Per hectare, up to 5000 kg of seeds are produced. The processing plant will be located in the city of La Paz, Entre Ríos, because it has access to the most important waterway of grain transportation in the country, on the Paraná river and is a usual point of circulation of grains by land from the Argentine north. The plant is divided into two naves, one in which castor oil is extracted by extrusion and pressing, and the other in which the obtained oil is subjected to the transesterification process to produce the biofuel. The plant produces biofuel, glycerin, and potassium phosphate and castor expeller. The plant will process 32 tons of grains per day with an extraction yield of 93% and obtaining 8.3 m3 of biofuel. Most of the equipment of the plant is national industry. In the extraction hall, the installed capacity is determined by the three extruders, while in the transformation zone of the oil it is determined by the transesterification tank. The cleanliness of the plant demands 2.000 liters of water daily. The load of the effluents is very low and can be discharged to the Paraná river without previous treatment. The greatest consumption of the plant is electrical energy; therefore it has two transformers of 1000KVA each. The demand for steam and water are minimal, but it counts for a water storage tank in case of fires. The extraction area of the plant has a total enclosure with roofs and walls ofzinc sheet, while the conversion does not have side walls only the zinc roof. The plant will have a staff of 19 professionals and an outsourced service of 6 people. The feasibility and profitability study yielded a TIR and VAN that shows that it is an excellent option to invest in this project.
